On November 5, Hudson Institute hosted author Os Guinness for a discussion about the state of freedom in the United States and his new book, Last Call for Liberty: How America's Genius for Freedom Has Become Its Greatest Threat. The conversation will be moderated by Hudson Distinguished Fellow Walter Russell Mead.

Since the 2016 campaign began, the level of rancor in U.S. politics has reached a crescendo, with many observers commenting that the country has not been so divided in generations. But the crisis is older than 2016. In his new book, Os Guinness argues that the conflict is rooted in two rival views of freedom, one embodied in “1776” and the ideals of the American Revolution, and the other in “1789” and the ideals of the French Revolution. Grounded in an exploration of history, civics, and ethics in the Jewish and Christian tradition, Guinness considers the ultimate prospects for human freedom today.

Defense Innovation and the New Cold War

This threat environment is teaching American defense planners and policymakers hard lessons about the need to adapt and change the way the United States budgets, tests, acquires, and deploys new and existing weapon systems. Join Hudson for two panels that will discuss these lessons and why Washington urgently needs to apply them.
