Kleptocracy has deprived the developing world of trillions of dollars, impoverishing the most vulnerable populations and entrenching authoritarian regimes. Too often, the proceeds of this corruption are laundered through tax havens before ending up in U.S. real estate and other investments. Meanwhile, powerful adversaries including China and Russia routinely employ corrupt practices as foreign policy tools, undermining the rule of law and security worldwide.

Despite the scale of this challenge, 2021 may prove to be a turning point in the United States’ struggle against global kleptocracy. President Biden has identified fighting corruption as a core U.S. national security interest and made it a central pillar of the U.S.-led Summit for Democracy. Congress has targeted money laundering by banning anonymous shell companies. Please join Hudson Institute for a discussion on further elevating America’s fight against kleptocracy with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and Hudson Research Fellow Nate Sibley.

Defense Innovation and the New Cold War

This threat environment is teaching American defense planners and policymakers hard lessons about the need to adapt and change the way the United States budgets, tests, acquires, and deploys new and existing weapon systems. Join Hudson for two panels that will discuss these lessons and why Washington urgently needs to apply them.
