Russia’s invasion of Ukraine constituted a watershed moment in European security, reordering the security architecture of the region and prompting Finland, along with its neighbor, Sweden, to seek admission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. If the two countries are accepted, it will be the first time in modern history that all Scandinavian countries are members of the same security alliance.

As an Arctic power with a Russian border that stretches hundreds of miles, Finland possesses unique insights and historical memories of the challenge posed by Moscow. With Helsinki only minutes from Tallinn by plane, it also plays a major role in Baltic affairs.

What perspectives and priorities does Finland bring to Nordic security and the West? What can it tell us about Russia’s vision for the world? And how does it see its role within the NATO alliance as well as the evolution of security and defense more generally? Please join Hudson Senior Fellow Peter Rough for a conversation with Finland’s Ambassador to the United States, Mikko Hautala, to discuss these questions and more.

Defense Innovation and the New Cold War

This threat environment is teaching American defense planners and policymakers hard lessons about the need to adapt and change the way the United States budgets, tests, acquires, and deploys new and existing weapon systems. Join Hudson for two panels that will discuss these lessons and why Washington urgently needs to apply them.
